DREI STILLE LIEDER for low voice and piano on poems by Friedrich Hölderlin
Drei stille Lieder was written by request of Marjanne Kweksilber and Stanley Hoogland, to whom it is also dedicated.
First performance July 11 at the Amsterdam IJsbreker. The piece is related to Diverso il Tempo and Postnuclear Winterscanetio, all written early 1991. The simple score is based on the 2# diatonic scale with the suggestion of modulations by putting notes in different registers. Drei stille Lieder should be performed softly, like the title says, and without any melodrama. The music should 'stand still', according to the breathtaking lyrcs of Friedrich Hölderlin. DSL can be sung by a mezzo or an alto, but also, one octave lower, by a tenor or a bariton. The piano part works well on harp too. Duration: approx 9:00
