SAX QUARTET  € 60

PITCH BLACK

Duration: 7:16

sax quartet & soundtrack

brass quartet & soundtrack

note:

The version for brass quartet can be ordered on special request. It was written by request of  Australian trumpeter Clint Allen who performed it with his band. It is however not a sophisticated arrangement, but a literal transcription of the original and  scored for: trumpet in C, French horn in F, trombone and bass trombone ( or tuba in C) Since we have no experience ourselves with it, you may have to adapt some sections to the specific possibilities of brass instruments.

Written in the summer of 1998 for the Aurelia Quartet, commissioned by the Almelo Chamber Music Society and the Dutch FPK.

The soundtrack reproduces the voice of trumpet player Chet Baker, from one of the last interviews before his tragic death by falling from an Amsterdam hotel room window in 1988. Baker talks about his past as a drug addict, his life in prison  - ‘it was pitch black in there you know’ - his first audition with Charlie Parker - ‘among 40 other trumpet players - or were there 60? ‘ - and playing without drums - ‘more cool’. These ‘speech melodies’ form the leitmotifs in Pitch Black.

Pitch Black recordings:

Aurelia Saxophone Quartet - Jacob Ter Veldhuis - Heartbreakers Emergo Classics (out of print) Prism Quartet - Pitch Black, the sax music of JacobTV- Innova 693

PITCH BLACK

Yeah I was locked up in ‘62

It was pitch black in there you know

And you couldn’t see anything comin’out of the sunlight

My eyes got used to the darkness

I looked around and then I saw...

I saw...Ooh I saw...

40 trumpetplayers! In there!

Yeah nono. Yeah nono

All the trumpetplayers in LA you know:

I saw Dizzy & Miles & Oh I guess Lee Morgan and all those guys you know 40!

40 trumpetplayers nono I mean 60

I managed to survive and really that’s a

Yeah I was locked up

It was pitch black in there you know

People are...People are...

Hhh but I got through it

I have the feeling here that uuh ‘s much more freedom

People are not so uptight about petty things

A permanent 24 hour party going on all year

Without drums, without drums

And really without drums!

I would call that more cool, without drums

Well that was it!

Yeah I was locked up in ‘62

It was pitch black in there you know And you couldn’t see anything comin’out of the sunlight

My eyes got used to the darkness I looked around

and then I saw...
